When you are foraging and you don't know what to eat, a general rule is to stay away from red. Over 50% of red berries in the wild are poisonous, like the plant below.

Atropa Belladonna - meaning beautiful woman in Italian... You might know it as Deadly Nightshade.

As it's name suggests, it is one of the most poisonous plants on the planet. Every part of the plant is poisonous. Even touching it can be harmful if your skin has any minor abrasions or cuts.

Some of the symptoms if ingested are:

  • rapid heartbeat

  • dry mouth

  • slurred speech

  • light sensitivity

  • blurred vision

  • inability to urinate

  • loss of balance

  • flushed skin

  • a rash

  • memory loss

  • seizures

  • confusion

  • hallucinations

  • paralysis

  • coma

  • respiratory failure

Though it's not native to the US, but has been found in zones 5-9. That's nearly every single one of us.

Moral of the story is don't touch it, consume it... don't even look at it
